Paralympian Dave Hill
In 2014 we made contact with Dave Hill and also invited him to meet the Positive Journey team at the project partnership meeting 5-9 May 2014.
We all enjoyed a dinner in the early summer evening at the China House, overlooking Plymouth’s historic Barbican.
Dave was born with the lower part of his left arm missing. He attended school in Exmouth but suffered from bullying when younger. Whilst there, he took up swimming and discovered a love for the sport that has led him to representing the UK at 15 years of age.
He also wanted to become a carpenter but was told that because of his disability, that he ought to seek another vocation. This did not stop him – he decided to design a prosthetic that he could use effectively to be able to study carpentry. He then qualified as a carpenter.
Swimming was (and still is) his great passion and he decided to continue dedicating himself to this sport. He went on to represent the UK at other Paralympic Games winning medals and setting records in the process.
His success did not go unnoticed – he was asked by Sky Sports “Living For Sport” to become one of their motivational speakers, going in to schools across the South West of England, to help promote sport as part of the legacy of the 2012 London Games (Inspire A Nation).
“This role is more than just encouraging young people to participate in sport. It’s about teaching the students valuable life skills which they can apply to all areas of their lives. Through Sky Sports Living for Sport, I hope to unlock the potential in everyone and demonstrate that sport really does changes lives.”
Dave has been doing this for a few years now, and receiving accolades for his positive mentor role.
Tri-athlon Paralympics 2016 in Rio de Janeiro
Dave’s next target is for the triathlon and taking part in the next Paralympics taking place in Rio in 2016. He finished Top British Athlete at the European Championship in the TRI 4 category in June 2013
He combines his very active motivational speaking schools programme with training in earnest, to compete at yet another Olympic Games for Paralympians.
Dave Hill in the Press & Media
Dave has appeared numerous times in the media and press reports:
Dave Hill epitomises what the APJ project is all about, when we remember that it was inspired by the smiling happy faces of paralympians on TV during the 2012 London Olympics.
